Mission Statement

The Excellence in Detector and Instrumentation Technologies symposium was created to ensure researchers entering the field today get the hands-on experience they need to successfully further their careers.

Overview

EDIT 2012 will be hosted by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL, USA. EDIT 2012 is the second in a new series of international symposiums on detector and instrumentation technologies. The EDIT symposium, started at CERN in Geneve, Switzerland, in 2011 (EDIT 2011).

Objective

EDIT is a symposium of Excellence devoted to young researchers, in their graduate studies or in their first year as a post doc, seeking to acquire a deeper knowledge on the major aspects of detectors and instrumentation technologies.

This goal is achieved by providing a diversified program that integrates topical academic courses with hands-on laboratories.

The practice-oriented approach of the symposium will be particularly profitable for physicists with limited hardware experience, as they can explore the performance and limitations of the technologies which are used in state-of-the-art experiments.

Participants’ understanding of technologies will be extended beyond their immediate circle to a broader view, favoring strong skills in understanding the operation of Detectors and fostering innovative ideas on R&D and data interpretation.

Scientific Agenda

The EDIT symposium Scientific Agenda will offer

  • a series of Plenary lectures
  • 8 days of hands-on lectures and laboratory courses
  • In-depth tours of working facilities

Students are gathered into 8 groups of 8 students each, 64 students total. Each group follows a program, covering all topics offered, with hands-on lectures interleaved with laboratory courses on the same topic.

Experts in the fields will support the participants in their learning process by providing continuous guidance as Teaching Assistants, experts who prepared the experimental set-ups, and Professors of Excellence, lecturers or experts who will support the students with additional explanations and critical discussions.

New - This Year!

EDIT 2012 will focus on testing detectors (cosmics, sources, beam), taking advantage of Fermilab's unique Test Beam Facility. This symposium will offer hands-on time by exploring a few topics in depth, spending two days on a single topic. In order to facilitate this, the schedule will feature an entire day of in-depth tours of recent and working detectors on the Fermilab site. See the Scientific Program for more details.

Registration Details

A total of 64 students were accepted to EDIT 2012, applications are no longer being accepted.

There is no registration fee for accepted applicants, but you or your institute will be liable for any other expenses (travel, accommodation and meals).
