Welcome to the International Neutrino Summer School social activities and area information web page!
Several organized social events are being planned as part of the 2009 School. In addition, some free
time is set aside in the schedule (particularly over the weekend) to allow participants the opportunity to
explore the area surrounding Fermilab as well as nearby Chicago.

On the Sunday evening before the first lectures a reception hosted by Fermi Research Alliance, LLC, will be held at the Pheasant Run Resort. Plans are to hold the event on the Terrace Patio next to the outdoor swimming pool. During this time, students will be able to register for the school and pick up their General Information packets. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and hors d'oeuvres will be served during the reception. Students and companions are invited to attend. |

A traditional "American Barbecue" will be held on Monday, July 6. This event, also sponsored by Fermi Research Alliance, LLC, will be held at the Kuhn Barn located in the Fermilab Village. This barn is one of the original barns that were located on the Fermilab site when it was first occupied by the National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab's former name) in 1968. The barn, built in the late 1800's, was renovated in 1970 and has been used as a large conference room and gathering place for many social clubs and events. Buses will transport students from Wilson Hall to the Village and will take students back to Pheasant Run at the end of the barbecue. Hamburgers, bratwurst, veggie burgers, and other standard picnic fare will be served. Companion tickets for this event cost $25.00 and will be available for purchase at the Secretariat. |
|
On Tuesday, July 14, another barbecue will be hosted by Fermi Research Alliance, LLC at the Kuhn Barn. This time it is a "Steak Fry" or strip steaks grilled on the barbecue. Grilled large portabella mushrooms will be available for vegetarians. Again buses will transport students to the Fermilab Village, and then take students back to Pheasant Run at the end of the evening. Companion tickets for this event cost $30.00 and will be available for purchase at the Secretariat. |
|
The farewell dinner will be held in the Marsalis Room at Pheasant Run on Thursday, July 16. Beef, fish, and vegetarian entree options will be available. Companion tickets for this event cost $50.00 and will be available for purchase at the Secretariat. |

The Pheasant Run Resort and Spa is located in St. Charles, IL, approximately 8 miles from Fermilab and 35 miles from downtown Chicago in the western suburbs. St. Charles is neighbor to several quaint towns which you may wish to explore while you are here, including Geneva, Batavia, and Naperville, to name a few. Similar to many towns in the midwest, there is very limited public transportation available. We provide some bus routes and taxi information below. Also, the Resort houses a rental car service and offers a free shuttle (advance notice required) that will transport guests anywhere within 5 miles of the Resort. The Resort is located within walking distance of many shops and reasonably priced restaurants. Maps and more information can be found by clicking on the links below.

Saturday and Sunday July 11-12 are left as free days with no scheduled School activities. This is an ideal time to visit nearby Chicago for those interested. Free bus transportation will be provided on both Saturday and Sunday mornings from Pheasant Run to the Geneva METRA train station, with METRA train service to downtown Chicago. At the end of the day, students must catch the METRA train from Ogilvie Station to Geneva. Buses will then provide transportation from the Geneva train station back to Pheasant Run on both evenings. See daily schedule for pick-up and drop-off times.
