From rohini@cts.iisc.ernet.in Sun Jan 6 21:24:58 2008 Date: Mon, 07 Jan 2008 08:54:56 +0530 From: Rohini M Godbole To: michelangelo mangano Cc: R.Keith Ellis Subject: Re: Request for advice on program Dear Keith and Michelangelo There is very little that I have to add to the excellent choices that you two have suggested. I just add further my comments and newer suggestions to Michelangelo's mail 5/27/08          Tuesday Morning : Top Physics 10.15-10.45    Top quark: Theory (Agashe, Willenbrock,Orr,Lillie,Ross D.A.)) MLM> I think that Scott would be the best speaker   I agree with Michelangelo's suggestion. I have advocated myself that we need somebody who can relate to the BSM connection   in the theory talk, but still I would give highest priority to Scott. One more possible theorists name that you may want to think of is  may be Eric Leannen. 5/27/08          Tuesday Afternoon: Standard model (QCD /Electroweak) 2.30-3.00        Theory of W/Z + jets (or hf) , parton showers, matching, NLO (Campbell) MLM> If you want someone with more experience in issues like matching and showers, I suggest you invite Frank Krauss    I do not have anything new to add here 5/28/08           Wednesday morning: QCD and partons 9.30 -10.00     Theory: QCD for the LHC (Webber, Frixione, Mangano, Nason, Skands) MLM> Skands could be a good 1st choice, to stay on the young side   I agree with MLM   5/29/08         Thursday Morning:  B Physics 8.30-9.00      Theory: B physics theory (Becher, Masiero, Nierste, Ligeti, Bigi, Silvestrini) MLM> SIlvestrini would be my first choice. he has a very good overall picture, including the BSM aspects.   my second choise will be Nierste. I agree with MLM's choice of first choice   5/29/08          Thursday Afternoon: New Phenomena 2.30-3.00       Theoretical review: Compelling beyond the SM models (Arkani-Hamed, Csaki, Pomarol, Ratazzi, Fox, Dobrescu) MLM> Nima would be great, but it's risky to invite him, he could show up 5' before (or after!) the start of his talk .... For a young emerging star, I would propose Roberto Contino. Rattazzi and Pomarol are very deep, but sometimes (often!) a bit hard to understand for experimentalists. Dobrescu would do a great job, as would Csaki. And dont forget M.Strassler  ..one more suggestion for this will be Grojean. He does give very clear talks. 4.30-5.00       Theory: Status of constraints on SUSY (Wagner, Weiglein, Heinemeyer, Dreiner) MLM> Heinemeyer, to stay young   I would add one more suggestion here. A. Belyaev. Also has the advantage of bringing in a new nationality!!!   2.00-2.30       Theory:Higgs boson production and decay (Oleari, Spira, Zeppenfeld, Bozzi, Worek) MLM> If you don't have too many italians already, Oleari would be an excellent choice. Else, if don't have too many germans already, Zeppenfeld.   Here I would like to suggest Margarete Muhelleitner to stay young. another suggestion will be Abdel Djouadi.   3.00-3.30       Theory: Higgs boson beyond the SM (Wagner,Weiglein,Heinemeyer) MLM> Carlos, if Sven gets the talk on SUSY constraints.   Calos is a fine choice for this. How about Pietro Slavich? That is a thought   5/31/08        Saturday morning Machine Status, Summaries and Prospects 9.00--9.45     Status of LHC Machine and plans for sLHC (Scandale, Rossi) MLM>  Rossi is an excellent speaker, but is mostly a hardware man. Scandale is more knowledgeable about the overall programme, including commissioning of the beams etc. Theory Summary (if you keep it on the agenda): if would be nice to force someone of high stature, who would not otherwise attend and who does not have interests too focused on any given topic of the conference, take this responsibility. E.g. Michael Peskin, who I am sure is interested in getting more engaged in hadron collider physics. Or people like Grinstein, Kaplan. Or J.Lykken, if you allow local people. From our community, I think that Bryan Webber would be a very good choice; workwise he is focused on qcd, but has a broad perspective.   I agree with MLM's suggestions. Would like to add Sally Dawson's name to this list of suggested names. She too has a broad perspective. Hope these comments are useful. I am away the whole day (mine) and will be back in the evening of Monday here in India. rohini
